The Hearts 4 Kids team has returned from another successful medical mission in Fiji, saving the lives of 14 babies and children. Hearts 4 Kids are a special volunteer medical team who travel to Fiji each year to carry out heart surgery on children who probably wouldn't receive it otherwsie. Many of the faces will be familiar to our heart kids families, as many of them have worked or still work at Starship Hospital.
This year one of the patients, a 10 year old who received a total valve replacement, returned to Auckland with the team, where he was fitted with a pacemaker. He acquired Rheumatic Heart Disease when he was just 7 years old. RHD is rife in the Pacific, because of overcrowding and a poor health system.
