For the fifth year in a row, 11-year-old Ethan Hayes is gearing up to take on the mighty BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. It’s an event close to this young Masterton boys heart, for a number of reasons. “When we did our first cycle challenge in 2014 I asked Dad what a ‘heart kid’ was. Heart Kids NZ has been the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge’s charity of choice for 16 years. “When I found out these kids were really sick and needed lots of operations I decided I would help them as much as I could.”
In a cruel twist of irony, just last year Ethan discovered he was in fact a heart kid himself. While playing around with a stethoscope in the doctor’s surgery, the GP took a listen to his heart and found a small heart murmur. “I am lucky, my heart defect is really small and doesn’t need to be fixed at the moment. But some other kids have so many operations and can't do the same stuff as me.”
Ethan, who is the Heart Kids Ambassador for 2018, has been sending letters to principals in the Wairarapa encouraging them to get behind the charity by holding mufti days and fundraisers. “I am as determined as ever to raise as much money as I can to help kids with heart problems and their families.”
Ethan’s ultimate aim is to become a world champion cyclist, with his first goal to create a one-hour cycling record for his age. Check out Ethan’s page here: https://cycleforheartkidstaupo18.everydayhero.com/nz/ethan-rides-again
