Northland's Brave Heart
When Ally Buchannan discovered at her 20 week scan the little baby she was carryingwould be born with a heart issue she was devastated.
“We were living in the Waikato at the time and knew nothing about a congenital heart defects.”
Just before little Naia was born the couple moved up to Auckland for the birth. She arrived at 37 weeks and within days had her first surgery.
Naia was born with Tricuspid Atresia, a condition where the tricuspid valve hasn’t formed between the right atrium and right ventricle. It meant she couldn’t get enough oxygen and had a bluey tinge to her skin.
She spent 135 days in hospital, undergoing two surgeries. She will need a third.
Ally says heart Kids has been with them every step of the way, providing support, information and a link to other families in a similar situation.
“The monthly coffee group is incredible, as no one really knows what it is like to have a heart child. To have the contact with others is just amazing. “
